Here are some tips to help keep you safe during the holidays…
Use a stepladder, not a chair, to hang decorations.
Never hang decorations from fire sprinklers.
Avoid overloading electrical outlets.
Turn off all electrical decorations before leaving.
Don’t run extension cords in high traffic areas.
Don’t “daisy chain” extension cords.
Don’t nail or staple extension cords to walls.
Don’t use more than three light sets on any one extension cord.
Make sure there are no frayed or exposed wires, loose connections or broken sockets when decorating with lights.
Never use lighted candles near trees, curtains, drapes or any potentially flammable item.
Keep your live Christmas tree in a sturdy, water-holding stand and keep it well watered so it does not dry out.
Make sure your artificial tree is labeled as fire resistant.
Make sure breakable or sharp ornaments are placed out of the reach of pets or children.
When preparing a meal, be sure to wash your hands, utensils, sink and anything that has come into contact with meats.
Use a food thermometer to be sure meat and poultry are cooked to a safe temperature.
Refrigerate food within two hours after serving.
Be aware of food allergies of guests.
If you are serving alcohol, be sure your guests are capable of driving. Designate a driver or arrange for a cab, Uber or Lyft is necessary.
