Protect yourself from holiday scammers and credit card thieves during the holidays by following these safety tips!
- Secure your devices and networks with a firewall or other security software.
- Limit the number of credit cards you use to make purchases.
- Make sure your credit card is signed and that your PIN number is not stored in your wallet or another non-secure location.
- Review your credit card statements frequently to check for fraudulent activity.
- Shop only on websites with https: in the web address – the “S” stands for secure.
- Safeguard your passwords and change them frequently.
- Don’t shop on public WIFI.
- Beware of “too good to be true” deals.
- Don’t respond to emails asking you for your account number or personal information, including login and password.
- Think carefully before opening new store credit cards.
- Be careful with receipts that might include an account number.
- Never give your card number over the phone unless you have initiated the phone call to a trusted source.
- Shop at established businesses that you are familiar with or can contact easily.
- Sign up for paperless statements to avoid sensitive information being sent through the mail.
